Observation Narrative
Stand located on bouldery colluvial slope. Pinus strobus (and perhaps P. virginiana) seems to be a gap-phase species here. Several large Quercus alba trees appear to predate stand initiation, but no stumps are evident and size structure does not clearly indicate past logging. A number of understory snags are present, not only of Cornus florida but also of Q. alba. Other than a few individuals of Q. stellata, no species characteristic of mafic or magnesium-rich soils are present. Large gap created by downed bole just outside plot covers almost half of module 9; its extent was not apparent until plot was laid out. Hence module 1 was chosen instead as one of the four focal modules.
From smaller (flagged) of two Pinus strobus (37 and 41 cm dbh): 1.8 m @ 226 deg to stake A.
